Yo’ Care South Sudan is a non-profit, non-political, and non-governmental organization established in December 2009 and registered under the laws of the Republic of South Sudan. It delivers integrated services in healthcare, nutrition, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) to communities across the country.
The organization focuses on addressing the needs of rural and vulnerable populations while reducing health inequalities. It began operations in Khartoum, Sudan, supporting internally displaced people from Southern Sudan, and has since expanded its programs and partnerships with the Ministry of Health, UN agencies, and international NGOs.

Healthcare
South Sudan’s healthcare system faces significant challenges, including poor access to health services due to an acute health workforce shortage, inadequate infrastructure, and low health service utilization. Maternal, infant, and child mortality rates are among the highest globally, and life expectancy is low at 56.5 years. Government funding for health is less than 2% of the national budget, making development assistance crucial. Out-of-pocket spending accounts for about 54% of total health expenditure, putting many South Sudanese at risk of catastrophic health costs. Despite these hurdles, efforts are underway to improve access and outcomes through collaboration with WHO and other agencies, focusing on strengthening leadership, governance, commodity management, equitable service delivery, and community systems.

Nutrition
South Sudan faces a severe nutrition crisis. As of 2021, about 5.8 million people (48.3% of the population) experience acute food insecurity, with 1.8 million in emergency conditions. Malnutrition is critical, affecting 53 counties (68% of all counties) with 1.4 million children under five expected to suffer from acute malnutrition. The malnutrition rate has exceeded the WHO emergency threshold of 15%. Challenges include limited access to basic services, conflict-induced displacement, and inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities. Malaria and acute watery diarrhea contribute to malnutrition. Efforts focus on treatment but face COVID-19-related disruptions.

WASH
In South Sudan, the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) situation is critical. Approximately 59% of the population lacks access to safe water, forcing families to drink dirty water and exposing them to waterborne diseases like cholera and diarrhea—leading causes of death among children. Poor hygiene practices further exacerbate the situation. Only 10% of the population has access to improved sanitation. UNICEF is addressing this by drilling boreholes, providing fresh water through trucking, distributing purification tablets, and promoting hygiene awareness. Efforts focus on preventing disease transmission and securing a healthier future for children¹.

Yo’ Care South Sudan has a competent Board, Management and programme team that execute project activities in South Sudan. Our leadership team has a proven track record of successfully developing and providing basic health, nutrition and WASH services in South Sudan and creating clinical programs/services that result in better people and patients care. Furthermore, we have demonstrated our ability to drive trusteeship value and built Yo’ Care South Sudan into an employer and service provider of choice for the majority of professionals and clients (beneficiaries) in South Sudan.

Mr. Daniel Malual Juac is a public health specialist and the Chair of the Board’s Business Development Committee. He joins the Board in 2021 bringing a wealth of experience with INGOs across the health spectrum.

Ms. Marcilia Paulo Adong is the Secretary-General and Chair of the Governance Committee. She joined Yo’ Care South Sudan’s Board in 2020 and previously served as their Data Insights Manager in MC.

Mrs. Nyakanitha Magaw is a professional Midwife with over 7 yrs of experience. She joined the Board in 2020 and is the Chair of the Board’s specialised committee on Finance, Audit, and Risk.
Dr. Yohanis Riek
Board President
Dr. Yohanis Riek is the President of the Board of Trustees. Prior to joining the Board in 2020, he was the CEO of Yo’ Care South Sudan from 2009.
